With sleep medicine launch, Wolters Kluwer expands UpToDate coverage to 24 specialties

The Health division of Wolters Kluwer, a leading global provider of information and point-of-care solutions for the healthcare industry, announced today that it has added sleep medicine to UpToDate®, its evidence-based clinical decision support resource. Sleep medicine marks the 24th medical specialty available to subscribing clinicians and healthcare institutions around the world.

While core sleep medicine topics were first developed in UpToDate over a decade ago, the addition of sleep medicine as a formal specialty is the result of more than three years of collaboration, led by UpToDate Sleep Medicine Editors-in-Chief Ronald D. Chervin, MD, MS and Nancy Collop, MD. They led a team of 84 prominent sleep medicine specialists to develop and expand the new specialty.

“Dr. Chervin and I were able to assemble the ‘A’ team to develop sleep medicine content in UpToDate,” said Dr. Collop. “UpToDate users will find the information on sleep medicine to be comprehensive, providing them with evidence-based content they need to care for patients with sleep complaints or sleep disorders.”

Clinicians using UpToDate can be confident they are integrating into their clinical practice the most current and wide-ranging information about sleep medicine. The continuously updated diagnostic information and treatment recommendations in UpToDate cover sleep-related breathing and movement disorders, insomnia, circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, parasomnias, and more, with content tailored to both adult and pediatric patients.

Specialists in pulmonary and critical care medicine, neurology, psychiatry, geriatrics, surgery and anesthesiology, as well as primary care internists, family medicine physicians, and pediatricians will also benefit from the expanded sleep medicine content now available in UpToDate.

Authored by leading sleep medicine experts from around the world, the new specialty spans 90 topics with over 70 graded recommendations. Professional topics are complemented by easy-to-read patient information topics, nearly 75% of which will also be available in Spanish. The specialty also includes over 260 graphics, ranging from pictures and tables to figures, graphs, algorithms and more. Sleep medicine content in UpToDate includes peer-reviewed, evidence-based recommendations that reflect the latest medical advances and practices from leading medical journals, including Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, Journal of Sleep Research, Sleep, Sleep Medicine, Sleep Medicine Review and others.

“Wolters Kluwer remains steadfast in its efforts to further develop the breadth and depth of rich clinical content clinicians trust to provide the very best care for their patients,” said Peter Bonis, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Clinical Effectiveness, Wolters Kluwer. “For sleep medicine specialists and additional healthcare providers around the world, the launch of our 24th specialty affirms that commitment to providing the most comprehensive, evidence-based recommendations available for treating patients.”

The new specialty is available now to subscribers at uptodate.com. For clinicians who rely on tablets and smartphones as mobile health tools, they can also find answers to clinical questions in the office, clinic or field by using the UpToDate mobile app. Available for iOS® and Android™ mobile platforms, the mobile app includes options to access all UpToDate content with or without an internet connection.
