Wolters Kluwer expands UpToDate with primary care sports medicine

The Health division of Wolters Kluwer, a leading global provider of information and point of care solutions for the healthcare industry, announced today that it has added primary care sports medicine to UpToDate®, its evidence-based clinical decision support resource, marking the 23rd medical specialty available to subscribing clinicians and healthcare institutions around the world.

The addition of primary care sports medicine is the result of over five years of collaboration led by Karl “Bert” Fields, MD, ABFM, CAQSM, Editor-in-Chief of UpToDate in Sports Medicine. Fields led a team of prominent primary care sports medicine specialists to expand and build the new specialty, covering non-surgical sports-related care for adults and adolescents.

Clinicians using UpToDate can be confident they are integrating into their clinical practice the most current and wide-ranging information about sports medicine. From the issues that affect athletes with medical conditions, to understanding biomechanics and training demands that predispose athletes to injury, to non-operative fracture care in active adults, the continuously updated diagnostic information and treatment recommendations in UpToDate will help clinicians care for patients more effectively so patients can recover and return to activity.

“Working with a team of respected leaders in sports medicine over the last five years, we have dramatically expanded and enhanced the sports medicine content and treatment recommendations in UpToDate. The new specialty truly encompasses views from a range of disciplines,” said Fields.

Primary care internists, family medicine physicians, and pediatricians, as well as specialists who regularly care for active patients, such as emergency medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, pulmonary and critical care medicine, and cardiology, will find the sports medicine content within UpToDate indispensable.

The UpToDate primary care sports medicine specialty includes over 260 topics, including easy-to-read patient information topics in English and Spanish, plus over 1,400 graphics. As with all UpToDate content, the new specialty includes peer-reviewed, evidence-based recommendations that reflect the latest medical advances and practices from over 470 medical journals, including American Journal of Sports Medicine, British Journal of Sports Medicine, Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research and others.

“UpToDate remains focused on developing the breadth and depth of our clinical content to ensure clinicians are equipped to provide the very best patient care,” said Denise Basow, MD, President & CEO, Clinical Effectiveness, Wolters Kluwer. “For sports medicine clinicians and other healthcare providers, the addition of primary care sports medicine, as well as other upcoming specialties, affirms our commitment to providing the most comprehensive, evidence-based recommendations available for treating patients.”

The new specialty is available now to subscribers at www.uptodate.com. And as sports medicine specialists increasingly adopt tablets and smartphones as clinical tools, they can also find answers to clinical questions in the office, clinic or field by using the UpToDate mobile app. Rated as one of "The best medical apps for your new iPhone" by iMedicalApps, UpToDate is available for iOS® and Android™ mobile platforms, as well as via any internet browser.
