The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated a looming nursing shortage leading us to a crisis point. At the current rate of turnover, the U.S. will lack up to 450,000 nurses by 2025. Despite the need for more staff, education programs are struggling to expand capacity due to fewer nursing faculty, clinical sites, and other resources. Inadequate staffing has led to unsafe working conditions. Nurses are suffering from burnout with too many patients, a widening experience gap, and not enough support. The result is widespread quality-of-care concerns, poor patient outcomes, and negatively impacted reimbursements.
An innovative professional practice model that extends what exists within the organization is crucial to keeping in step with today’s demands. The Clinical Practice Ability Framework provides a model for competency, setting the bar for the expected level of performance that integrates knowledge, skills, abilities, and judgments. Applying the Framework as an adjunct to existing professional practice models can promote a safer environment, provide new knowledge to advance competency, and create structural empowerment that leads to professional advancement.

Wyndy possesses an extensive background in clinical quality, education and competency management, policy development and management, and nursing administration in both acute care and ambulatory health systems.
Anne Dabrow Woods is the Chief Nurse of Wolters Kluwer, Health Learning, Research and Practice, a global healthcare information company where she is responsible for leading the nursing strategy. A nurse for over 39 years, and an NP since 1998, she practices as an acute care/critical care nurse practitioner for Penn Medicine. Anne is also adjunct faculty in the graduate nursing programs at Drexel and Neumann Universities and she precepts NP and DNP students. She previously taught as adjunct faculty in the undergraduate nursing program for Immaculata University. She received her BSN from West Chester University, her MSN from LaSalle University, a post-master’s certificate from Drexel University, and a DNP from Texas Christian University. She was awarded the Excellence in Nursing Leadership Award from Sigma Theta Tau International Kappa Delta Chapter in 2018 and she was inducted as a Fellow into the American Academy of Nursing in 2016. She is a representative of the HIMSS CNO/CNIO Industry Partner Work Group and the Alliance for Nursing Informatics.
