Challenge

Getting nursing students into the workforce faster

With the state of Maryland facing a shortage of 10,000+ registered nurses by 2025, Notre Dame University of Maryland partnered with Orbis Education to create the state’s only Accelerated BSN program.

Notre Dame of Maryland’s new curriculum is designed for today’s nursing students, who increasingly already have a bachelor’s degree. By teaching theory online, students’ on-campus time is dedicated to clinical experience — allowing them to graduate in just 15 months.

When the COVID-19 pandemic began, Notre Dame of Maryland faced even greater pressure to creatively integrate digital resources to minimize learning disruption.

All the textbooks needed to be online, and we needed to give our students access to clinical resources. CoursePoint+ and vSim were our best option. We love everything about it. The students get into the virtual simulations. They’re good for teaching critical thinking, and lead to rich conversations.

Solution

The Notre Dame of Maryland hybrid ASBN program applied Lippincott CoursePoint+ to design a state-of-the-art hybrid program that maximizes students’ on-campus time.

Students learn theory through CoursePoint+, clinical prep through DocuCare, and clinicals through vSim. The tools work together to teach and reinforce the material, with pre- and post-simulation exercises that help students connect the dots. With this intensity, faculty equate the three-hour simulations to a six-hour clinical day.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Notre Dame of Maryland adapted DocuCare and vSim to ensure students stayed on track.
