Barrier-based versus non-barrier-based risk methods

How do you choose a risk method that suits your needs when it comes to risk analysis and the management of risks?

In this blog post we focus on barrier-based risk methods versus non-barrier-based risk methods. The main commonality of the two is that in both instances you’re trying to make an analysis of a cascade into an unwanted event. But the difference lies in how you are analyzing this.

  • Non-barrier-based methods: In these risk methods you are focusing on that undesired outcome that you are trying to prevent
  • Barrier-based methods: in these methods you are focusing on the barrier that prevents the cascading

Of course there is not a wrong or a right method, there is just a difference:

  • Do you want to focus on the outcomes and how you are going to prevent this is still a question mark?
  • Or do you want to focus on implementing how you are going to prevent this.

If you want to choose a method that not only identifies risk but also considers how to control these risks, then maybe you should opt for a barrier-based method.
