New product alliance links evidence-based medicine with diagnosis decision support

Wolters Kluwer Health, a leading provider of information and business intelligence for students, professionals, and institutions in medicine, nursing, allied health, pharmacy and the pharmaceutical industry, and Isabel Healthcare today announced the integration of Wolters Kluwer Health’s Clin-eguide™ clinical decision support tool with Isabel’s award-winning diagnosis reminder system.

Clin-eguide is an online clinical decision support tool that provides the most accurate evidence-based information for health care providers in the clinical setting. It integrates trusted content from Ovid, Facts & Comparisons™, and Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins, as well as other premier publishers. Isabel is a validated, web-based diagnosis decision support and knowledge mobilizing system designed to help reduce and manage diagnosis error at the point of care.

Together, the two systems are the first to offer comprehensive access to evidence based medicine for both treatment and diagnosis.

A 3-year project funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research Quality (AHRQ) found that 10 - 30 % of medical errors are diagnosis errors. In 2008, AHRQ intends to a get better understanding of incidence, cost, determinants & strategies for preventing or mitigating diagnostic errors. Isabel has been proven to decrease diagnosis error due to cognitive factors and premature closure. Given a patient’s clinical features the Isabel Diagnosis Reminder and Knowledge Mobilizing System instantly provides a validated check-list of likely diagnoses, bio-terrorist conditions and causative drugs for the clinician to consider.  Clinicians who already rely on Clin-eguide to check facts, review evidence, determine treatment and check drug interactions now have one-click access to Isabel.

“Medical diagnoses that are wrong, missed, or delayed make up a large fraction of all medical errors and cause substantial suffering and injury,” said Joseph Britto MD, CEO and Co-founder of Isabel Healthcare.  “Patients present with clinical features and Isabel is able to uniquely assist clinicians the quality of diagnosis decision making by processing clinical features into diagnoses.”

“Improving the consistency and quality of patient care while saving time for busy clinicians and pharmacists is a fundamental benefit of Wolters Kluwer Health’s point-of-care products,” said Arvind Subramanian, President and CEO, Wolters Kluwer Health Clinical Solutions. “We’re pleased to offer our Clin-eguide clients access to Isabel’s rigorously tested, validated diagnosis system.”
