The Royal College of General Practitioners gives nod to clinical decision support resource for CPD

GPs Can Now Earn CPD Learning Credits with UpToDate Clinical Decision Support from Wolters Kluwer.

The Health division of Wolters Kluwer, a leading global provider of information and point of care solutions for the healthcare industry, announced today that the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) has accredited its clinical decision support resource, UpToDate®.

General Practitioners (GPs) in the United Kingdom are focused on targeted learning to meet the requirements for revalidation. The Royal College of General Practitioners, the professional body of over 50,000 GPs that works to raise standards of patient care, has always been committed to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and lifelong learning. In addition to offering its own CPD resources, the College also awards the Accreditation quality mark to educational activities and resources that meet the world-renowned high standards of the RCGP. GPs who are members of the RCGP will now be able to use UpToDate towards their CPD and to support their revalidation needs.

UpToDate contains over 10,500 clinical topics and more than 9,600 graded recommendations to support better clinical decisions at the point of care. A rigorous editorial process is implemented by more than 50 physician editors on staff who work with over 6,000 expert authors, editors, and peer-reviewers around the world to continuously publish updated clinical information and recommendations.

UpToDate, a web and mobile device-based clinical decision support tool, will offer the College's 50,000 members quick and easy access to a breadth of evidence-based clinical information, in 22 medical specialties through the College's web portal. RCGP Education Clinical Leads, who accredited UpToDate, are of the view that, “UpToDate is an excellent resource which will not only help GPs to keep their knowledge and skills current, but it could also raise the standards and quality of patient care. UpToDate is ideal, because, as its name suggests, the articles have been updated recently, and yet they combine clinical wisdom, experience and research. GPs will now be able to claim CPD credits for using the resource.”

The accreditation coincides with the announcement of a new partnership between UpToDate and the RCGP. The collaboration reinforces the College's commitment to its membership body by providing access to trusted clinical decision support and promoting excellence in primary healthcare.

Denise Basow, MD, President & CEO, Clinical Effectiveness, Wolters Kluwer, has said, “As the guardian of standards for family doctors in the UK, the Royal College of General Practitioners shares our aim of equipping doctors with the most current, evidence-based information so they can make the best care decisions for their patients. This partnership, enhanced by the CPD accreditation granted to UpToDate, reflects our commitment to the College as they support the efforts of general practitioners to remain at the forefront of effective clinical practice throughout their careers.”

Ranked first among “The best medical apps for your new iPhone” by iMedicalApps and rated as one of “The Best Apps in Publishing” by EContent Magazine, the UpToDate app is available in iOS, Android™ and Windows 8 mobile platforms as well as via any mobile internet browser. In 2014 alone, clinicians viewed over a quarter billion UpToDate clinical topics online and via mobile device.
