Wolters Kluwer, Laerdal Medical expand vSim for nursing with new foundational virtual simulation courses

In response to the growing challenge of providing nursing students with access to sufficient hands-on clinical education hours, Nursing Schools are turning to virtual simulation to fill the void. Today, Wolters Kluwer and Laerdal Medical announced that they have expanded vSim for Nursing™ with 52 additional curriculum-driven patient scenarios to be used with Fundamentals, Pharmacology, Gerontology, Maternity, and Pediatric curriculum.

With vSim for Nursing, nursing students experience realistic patient encounters that are essential to their success in clinical practice.  The product combines leading-edge virtual simulation technology from Laerdal, simulation scenarios developed jointly with the National League for Nursing (NLN), and Wolters Kluwer's deep curriculum expertise and trusted Lippincott CoursePoint+ curriculum and materials.

“We are combining Wolters Kluwer's deep knowledge and understanding of how to integrate technology solutions and learning curriculum to improve student preparation with Laerdal's simulation expertise and the NLN's educational content to create a best-in-class solution that helps colleges and universities graduate more practice-ready nurses,” said Jayne Marks, Vice President, Global Publishing, Wolters Kluwer, Health Learning Research & Practice. “This combination provides nursing students with the skills they need to move confidently from the classroom to the clinical environment.”

Accessed online, vSim for Nursing simulates a patient encounter using computer-animated avatars that allow nursing students to access and practice patient care anytime and anywhere. The virtual simulation environment helps build competence by introducing nursing students to realistic scenarios where they are responsible for making a variety of clinical reasoning decisions. The simulator reacts to each care decision and tracks these actions so that they can be reviewed and measured with personalized feedback after the scenario. The post-scenario report is then stored for reflection and continued learning.

“Simulated patients, such as those within vSim for Nursing, provide an added degree of efficiency to the nursing education process,” said David LaCombe, Director of Marketing, Laerdal Medical.  “vSim enables exponential opportunity for students to practice assessments and make decisions without instructors having to be present. Student performance and progress is completely transparent to instructors. It's like having a force of clinical instructors at your disposal.”

The Fundamentals and Pharmacology vSims were released in August, while Gerontology, Maternity, and Pediatric simulations were released earlier this year. Each vSim for Nursing course is embedded with SmartSense links to clinical information. Also included are curriculum resources such as suggested reading, pre- and post-simulation activities, documentation exercises to be utilized with Lippincott DocuCare, and guided reflection questions.

Designed for use throughout the nursing program, vSim for Nursing is available for individual or institutional sales to nursing schools as a standalone product or as part of Lippincott CoursePoint+, a total course solution that includes integrated course content and adaptive quizzing. The product can be purchased through Laerdal Medical or Wolters Kluwer Health sales representatives.
