Wolters Kluwer helps improve patient education and boost HCAHPS scores by adding quizzing to the patient teaching content set in Lippincott Advisor

The Newly Expanded Solution Will Be Showcased in Booth #613 at the ANCC National Magnet 2016 Conference.

Wolters Kluwer, a leading global provider of information and point of care solutions for the healthcare industry, today announced the addition of an innovative quizzing component for its recently released Patient Teaching Navigator add-on to Lippincott Advisor. By helping bedside clinicians more effectively communicate with and educate patients and families about their hospitalization and treatments, Lippincott Advisor Patient Teaching Navigator increases patient satisfaction and, subsequently, Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores.

Lippincott Advisor provides immediate evidence-based answers to clinicians’ most pressing care-related questions. Written by nurses, for nurses, Lippincott Advisor is an expanding collection of more than 16,000 evidence-based entries and patient teaching handouts that cover diseases and conditions, diagnostics tests, signs and symptoms, treatments and more – all accessible quickly and easily via any Internet-enabled device including smartphones and tablets.

In response to the growing emphasis on patient education, Lippincott Advisor was enhanced in February 2016 with the addition of Patient Teaching Navigator, an efficient and standardized approach to educating nurses and clinicians on exactly what to say to patients. It also provides guidance on assessing and identifying patients who may present challenges to customary teaching strategies. The newly added Quizzing feature takes that guidance a step further, leveraging quizzes to validate and reinforce clinicians’ knowledge of learning principles.

Patient education has a significant impact on HCAHPS scores. It is directly linked to five survey questions and influences responses to several others. With these scores published on the Hospital Compare website and with survey data used to generate hospital star ratings, ignoring patient education carries substantial risk. HCAHPS results are also tied to 30% of the total performance score used to set value-based purchasing reimbursements.

“Educating patients to ensure they are fully prepared to care for themselves after discharge is a key strategy for improving HCAHPS scores. The more comfortable clinicians are with this responsibility, the more likely they are to carry it out effectively,” said Anne Woods, DNP, RN, CRNP, ANP-BC, AGACNP-BC, Chief Nurse, Health Learning, Research & Practice, Wolters Kluwer. “Beyond scores and rankings, Lippincott Advisor also enables evidence-based practice at the bedside, empowering clinicians with the knowledge, tools and resources needed to drive improvements in patent safety and care outcomes and help advance clinicians in their journey to clinical excellence.”

Part of the Lippincott Solutions suite, Lippincott Advisor is available as a group subscription to hospitals and other healthcare facilities. It will be showcased in the Wolters Kluwer booth #613 at the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) National Magnet® 2016 Conference taking place October 5-7 in Orlando, FL.
