The world after the coronavirus according to Chief Strategy Officer

The Dutch leading business newspaper FD spoke to Atul Dubey, Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) at Wolters Kluwer, on what the world will look like after the coronavirus crisis and how we can support our customers in these challenging times. Working alongside our customers, we will continue to apply advanced technologies to address complex problems in society, supporting our three-year strategy.

This is a summary of a broader article in which also CSO’s of Royal Philips and Royal HaskoningDHV gave their views on the same topic.

While the CEO and his financial adjutant are tasked with defusing the crisis, the chief strategy officer is tasked with racking his brains over the question: What's next?

“Our focus is on the medium and long term. We have been doing a digital marketing project for some time now. That is simply going ahead. But obviously our business reviews do look at the effects of this crisis. Then we compare ourselves to the competition. And I am involved in drawing up and implementing the worst-case scenarios. I have a lot of experience in that. During the financial crisis, I did the same thing at Citibank.”

We will see consolidations in aviation, travel, and in the hotel sector. But small tech companies could also get hit because the cash flow dries up. Hospitals are going to cooperate more.

Large multinationals are very busy handling the coronavirus crisis. Behind the scenes, however, company strategists are considering what the world will look like after the coronavirus crisis. “I do foresee some major trends. We will see consolidations in aviation, travel, and in the hotel sector. But small tech companies could also get hit because the cash flow dries up. Hospitals are going to cooperate more. They have to do that now more than ever, but they've been battling with costs for a long time.

For Wolters Kluwer, I see an acceleration of working in the cloud because of this crisis. A country like Germany is not yet as developed as it should be in that field. That will give us some business. Everyone has also been focused on growth in recent years. This is going to change now.”

The pandemic also brings certain opportunities to companies. “As Wolters Kluwer, we need to make the pitch that companies and institutions can work faster, better, and cheaper with our products. And I expect more regulation from the government. That's good for Wolters Kluwer, because we provide in-depth information about this,” Atul concluded.
