The simulation world is replete with new methods and strategies to bolster and enhance simulation programs. In addition, the paradigm of simulation learning is continuously changed and augmented by new technologies and tools. This session will present current, effective innovations to add to participants’ simulation toolboxes.

Following this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify current innovations in simulation education, including virtual screen-based, virtual reality, extended reality, and artificial intelligence enhanced simulations
  2. Explore the integration of innovative strategies into large and small simulation programs.

About the speakers

Tina Scott, DNP, PMC-NE, CHSE, RN

With over 20 years of nursing experience across diverse hospital and clinical settings and 12 years in academia, Dr. Scott has developed a robust expertise in various medical specialties, including Medical-Surgical, Community, Neurosurgical, Cardiology, Dermatology, Rheumatology, and Pulmonology.

Dr. Scott’s extensive career includes a variety of key leadership roles within the nursing field, where she has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing adult healthcare. Her leadership skills, developed through years of experience in diverse healthcare settings, have naturally translated into her pioneering work in simulation-based education. As the current Director of the Experiential Learning Center at North Carolina Central University’s Department of Nursing, Dr. Scott is dedicated to leveraging cutting-edge simulation technology to elevate nursing education and improve student outcomes. She has been instrumental in integrating innovative simulations across the nursing curriculum, enhancing both theoretical learning and hands-on clinical skills. Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Scott is deeply involved in her community, where she actively holds various leadership positions, further solidifying her dedication to fostering growth and excellence in nursing practice.

Over the past six years, Dr. Scott has played a pivotal role in simulation planning, implementation, facilitation, and debriefing, adhering to the International Nursing Association of Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) standards. Her efforts have significantly advanced students’ critical thinking and psychomotor skills. By creating realistic and supportive simulation environments, Dr. Scott has consistently fostered student success, solidifying her role as a leader in simulation-based education.

Dr. Scott is a proud alumna of the University of South Carolina and East Carolina University. She is actively involved in several professional organizations, reflecting her commitment to leadership and community service. Her dedication to helping others succeed and transforming communities underscores her impactful career.

Michelle Aebersold, PhD, RN, CHSE, FSSH, FAAN
Michelle Aebersold, PhD, RN, CHSE, FSSH, FAAN, PhD, RN, CHSE, FSSH, FAAN

Dr. Michelle Aebersold is a Clinical Professor at the University of Michigan School of Nursing, a Clinical Associate Professor in the School of Information, and an XR Faculty Innovator in Residence. She is a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator and a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.

Dr. Aebersold has extensive experience in using a variety of simulation learning methods including Extended Realities to improve the care of patients through caregiver education and training. She engages in grant-funded projects using immersive virtual reality for team training, practice readiness, and multidisciplinary collaboration to improve healthcare.

Dr. Aebersold has numerous publications, presents on a variety of topics, and is often an invited speaker at international, regional, and local conferences.

Judith W. Herrman
Judith W. Herrman, PhD, RN, CNE, ANEF, FAAN
Judith W. Herrman is a nurse, educator, and researcher dedicated to enhancing nursing student learning, faculty effectiveness, and positive client outcomes. As a retired Full Professor from the School of Nursing, University of Delaware, Judy is widely published and works as a Senior Clinical Content Specialist-Nursing for Wolters Kluwer. Judy speaks nationally and internationally about learning across the lifespan, nursing education, the teen brain, adolescent sexual decision-making, and intimate partner violence. Research interests include teen sexual decision making, brain learning, intimate partner violence, and clinical judgment. Judy is active in product development for Wolters Kluwer and consults with nursing schools about enhancing clinical judgment, creative teaching strategies, accreditation, NCLEX® and Next Generation success, testing, curriculum design, team building, brain science and learning, generational learning, and other topics revolving around enhancing nursing education and student learning. She is preparing the 4th Edition of Creative Teaching Strategies for the Nurse Educator slated for 2025.
