Lexidrug - Facts and Comparisons User Academy
The Patient Education tool can be accessed via the blue tool bar at the top of the screen. This tool provides an opportunity to access and print patient-focused materials addressing medications, conditions, procedures, discharge instructions, natural products, and healthy living, depending on your subscription.
Searching and Selecting Leaflets
The right content panel includes several tabs across the top to allow the user to find desired leaflets via search or browsing alphabetically by topic. The left pane allows the user to change the language (if included in your subscription), and contains several options for printing once the packet is ready (described later).
To search for a topic, enter a keyword into the search box and click the Search button. A list of matching topics will be displayed in the right pane. To use the browse functionality, click the "Browse" tab at the top of the content panel to bring up available categories. From this screen, the user can choose to browse conditions, procedures, discharge instructions, healthy living topics, natural products, and medication leaflets (both adult and pediatric). To view available topics, click on the desired hyperlink under the type of leaflet you wish to view ("Alphabetically" or "By Category"). When browsing by alphabetical index, select a letter of the alphabet to view the topics that begin with that letter. When browsing by body system, click on the desired category to see a list of topics available.
To preview a leaflet, click on Leaflet Preview and the leaflet will be displayed in a preview window. To print from this preview screen, click Print in the upper right corner. To add a leaflet to a packet from the preview mode, click the Add To Packet button. To exit the preview mode, click Close.
Print or preview leaflets in a different language
Leaflets can be viewed or printed in English, Spanish, or additional languages, depending on your subscription. To print a single leaflet, click the Print button, and then print the document. To print or preview leaflets in a different language, change the language option in the left panel under “Packet Options” before searching for the topic. If the language is available for that leaflet, you can click on the Leaflet Preview or Print buttons to display or print the leaflet in the desired language, respectively. If the leaflet is not available in the desired language, a red asterisk will appear next to the leaflet title, with a message underneath the search box indicating that the leaflet is not available.
Creating a Packet
Groups of leaflets, called “Packets”, can be created to allow for multiple items to be printed at once. To create a new packet, click the Add to Packet button next to the desired leaflet, either from the search results or leaflet preview screens. Selected leaflets will be displayed under their respective sections in the left pane. Continue this process until all desired leaflets are added to your packet. Once a packet has been created, you have the option to print in English and Spanish, or in a variety of other languages if available for that topic, depending on your subscription. To select a different language, click on the drop-down menu and select the desired language. If a leaflet is not available in a particular language, a red asterisk will appear next to the affected leaflet in the left pane when the language is selected, with a message at the top of the left pane indicating that the leaflet is not available. (Note: Users should be aware that the English content is released upon completion of the content development and review cycle. Additional language content is made available as soon as the translation process is complete. Due to the additional time required for translation, new leaflets and updates to existing leaflets in the additional languages will lag behind the English leaflet.)
Previewing the Current Packet
To preview the current contents of the packet, click the "Preview Current Packet" tab at the top of the content window. This will display all of the documents that you have currently added to your packet as well as the Patient Summary and Signature Page (if selected). From this preview screen, you can choose to add the patient's name and any notes to be printed on the Patient Summary and Signature Page (Note: This information is not stored in the system and will be lost if you exit this tool or print the packet and start over).
The Packet Contents Panel
The left side of the screen displays the "Packet Contents" panel. This panel allows the user to select several options for the packet being created and will also display a list of the current leaflets that are included in the packet. The packet options that can be added include:
- English copy of non-English leaflets – Checking this box will automatically print an English copy in addition to any non-English language leaflets. This functionality is designed to assist an English-speaking clinician when counseling patients who do not speak English fluently.
- Patient Summary – Checking this box will create a cover sheet document that can be customized with the patient's name, a listing of the packet contents, and any related notes. This page can also be customized to include an institutional logo.
- Signature Page – Checking this box will create a document designed to be filed in a patient chart that summarizes the packet contents and helps the patient and clinician to document part of the patient education process. Note: Patient education leaflets do not replace or substitute for verbal counselling, written information that may be required to be given to patients (eg, Medication Guides), or other interactions between patients and their healthcare professionals.
In addition to the above options, the "Packet Contents" panel also allows the user to change the language (described earlier) as well as modify the font size for the entire packet using the "Font Size for Printout" drop-down menu. (Note: Users are responsible for printing content in a font size that is sufficiently large that it can be read by a particular patient.)
Click “Clear” to remove any entries and begin a new search.
