Despite the vast amount of information available to improve healthcare delivery, the majority of care that is delivered is not always developed through evidence-based practice or research methods. Challenges with evidence-based practice (EBP), research, and quality improvement (QI) include lack of experience by investigators, time pressures, insufficient resources, availability of mentors, and organizational support. Healthcare leaders lack a clear view of all research, EBP, and QI projects occurring across the system, which oftentimes results in duplication of efforts and limited spread of practices shown to be effective.
This presentation will describe how the innovative use of technology can provide step-by-step guidance from problem identification with a PICOT question through project completion and dissemination, resulting in increased efficiency and effectiveness with nurse researchers, DNP students, new-to-practice residency projects, EBP fellowship programs, and QI initiatives — all while supporting the integration of projects across multiple health facilities.

Lya Cartwright-Stroupe is currently a Johnson & Johnson Nursing Innovation Fellow. Lya has led organizational initiatives that include a clinical program for professional excellence for direct care nurses, implementation of care plans, patient education, as well as initiatives for the nursing workforce. Dr. Stroupe currently serves as Chair on the Commission for Accreditation for the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Lya serves on the National Collaborative for Improving the Clinical Learning Environment (NCICLE) Pathways to Excellence Adaptation Work Group. Lya is the current president of WVONL, an affiliate of AONL. She serves on faculty in the West Virginia University Schools of Nursing and Medicine. Dr. Stroupe holds a BSN degree from West Virginia University and MSN and DNP degrees from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC.
In a career spanning more than four decades, Dr. Barbara Mayer has worked in the clinical arena as a critical care nurse and Clinical Nurse Specialist; at the National level for the American Association of Critical Care Nurses as Director of Education overseeing the National Teaching Institute and development of the Essentials in Critical Care Orientation e-learning program; and in academia as a clinical instructor at the California State University San Marcos. She has served in various leadership roles overseeing professional practice and quality, most recently as the Executive Director for Professional Practice and Clinical Improvement, before transitioning to her current role as Senior Nurse Consultant for Evidence-Based Practice at Stanford Healthcare. Dr. Mayer is the founder of the Stanford Center for Practice Excellence and serves as the Director, overseeing the utilization and adoption of nursing evidence across the continuum. Dr. Mayer is also a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Stanford School of Medicine, working closely with Residents and Medical Directors identifying opportunities for improvement.
Rachel Dicker is a Product Management Associate at Wolters Kluwer, Health Learning, Research & Practice. She is responsible for creating and implementing product strategies, innovation, and market outreach for new clinical research and information solutions. Her current focus is supporting academic and clinical leadership to teach, adopt, implement, and disseminate best practices to improve quality, safety, investments, and patient outcomes. She received the 2021 Health Learning, Research & Practice High Performance Recognition Award and the 2021 Wolters Kluwer Global Innovation Award.
