One of the missions of Wolters Kluwer is to be transparent with the professionals from the legal sector and demonstrate first hand the experience and benefits that Kleos offers its users. On this occasion, we had the opportunity to interview Jordi Lozoya, manging partner of this renowned firm.
First of all, we wanted to know what life was like before Kleos and the reason why this firm opted for digital transformation. According to Jordi Lozoya, the difference between life before and after Kleos is marked by managing information with physically stored material versus the change towards digital storage and management. Furthermore, the collaborative environment between the firm’s members offered by Kleos software leads to a much more productive workflow. Consequently, establishing work processes on a collaborative platform makes management more efficient.
However, that was not the only reason that led this firm of professionals made up of excellent lawyers and economists to change to digital transformation, it was also the corporate vision of its managing partner. Fortunately, the head of this firm was not a traditional professional, who was not keen to make changes, but an entrepreneur leading the change, a person who did not envisage the firm as a group of professionals managing cases as it had been doing for decades. He was a person with a much more innovative vision of what a firm of lawyers and economist had to be like. “Anyone who owns a company has to work like an entrepreneur and not a lawyer. We have to run businesses”, says Jordi Lozoya when he advises his peers.
In this regard, Jordi has a Licentiate Degree in Business Administration and Management, and a Diploma in Business Studies. He comes from the world of the textile industry and when he was only 25 years old he held the post of Financial Director in a company in the textile industry. It was he who took charge of digitally transforming the company where he worked, “At that time in the textile industry, two plus two was never four. I had to fight against that digitalising the processes. That is what I wanted to implement in the firm; I wanted the same process management but taken to the legal sector. This way, if my planning is based on the work the employees have, then I know the amount of work everyone has every week and I know how much work we can accept, etc.”.
From a practical perspective, Jordi Lozoya tells us that his intention was to achieve “greater control over internal management. If we are 28 professionals in the firm and each worker invoices €2,000 less, in the end the firm loses €56,000 every month. Therefore, we must have a corporate vision and, for that purpose, we need tools that enable us to control what is being produced”. It was thanks to our corporate vision that since 2015 this well-known law firm has increased its turnover by 160%. In this respect, Jordi comments, “I’m delighted with Kleos. We wouldn’t have had the possibility to grow so much without a tool like Kleos”.
The managing partner of LOZOYA & JOHER, Economistes i Advocats says that Kleos particularly stands out and is very useful in matters related to business law, as there are many recurrent procedures and tasks. Moreover, all the departments in the firm work in a collaborative environment. In the Tax Department and Accounting Department they also use Kleos. “One of the things we like the most is that we have all the information about everything at once. If a person asks me about any matter or task, I enter the app and I can look at it immediately. If, for example, I want to generate a task related to the Accounting Department, such as our clients’ month-end close, Kleos enables me to do it, as it takes care of a huge part of the control that ensures everything is going well and it makes the completed task appear automatically”, he says.
Therefore, there is total control over all the documentation that belongs to a client’s file, and over each pending task. This also benefits the clients, as they can rest assured that their case is totally under control.
As regards the advice Jordi Lozoya would give his peers when it comes to making the decision to digitalise their firm, the managing partner is very clear, “If we want a future, we must digitalise the company’s processes. We’ve grown so much because we do things well, and one of the things we’ve got right is digitalisation”. He also affirms that, “firms need to take the time they need to implement the software, which can often be a long process, and they mut also tailor it to their needs, as this is a key aspect as regards their return on investment (ROI)".
