A new report on mental health from UpToDate provides insights, solutions, and strategies for health leaders to integrate mental health into primary care.
Mental health is shifting into the primary care setting. The World Health Organization reports mental health challenges affect one out of eight people and were the largest contributors to the non-fatal disease burden in 2019.
However, providers need support and solutions to make a meaningful impact for their patients. In the US, primary care physicians (PCPs) provide 60% of the mental health services and write 79% of the prescriptions for antidepressants, despite not being formally trained mental health specialists. They’re also searching for answers, with an average of 2 million searches on mental health topics from PCPs within the UpToDate® clinical decision support solution.
