Upgrade your risk management skills with Advanced features

Are you working with bowties almost every day?

In this blog you will get acquainted with some of the BowTieXP Advanced features that one: save time; two: make bowtie building easier; and three: increase risk insight.

1 – Advanced filter: showcase relevant barriers for a specific group

How do you showcase the relevant (poor) barriers for a specific group? By using the Advanced Filter! In this video, the advanced filter is set to display only barriers relating to the job title ‘Driver’ and effectiveness ‘Poor’. This way ‘Driver’ employees know exactly which barriers they should improve, how convenient!

2 – Barrier families: get the actual number of independent barriers

Once your bowtie is finished and all the barriers are defined, you can start with your barrier analysis. The first thing we usually advice is to check if all your barriers are independent and fully capable to prevent and protect possible damage. This means that each barrier should have a detect, decide and act component. Is the barrier capable to detect the harm, make a decision, and act appropriately?

To give you a true picture of the actual number of independent barriers, we created barrier families. The software allows you to group barriers that depend on each other.

3 – Systems & parts: Link maintenance data to your barriers

Many companies want to extend the BowTieXP functionality to integrate with their (computerized) Maintenance Management System, so they can display the (real-time) availability of their hardware barriers.

Technical barriers usually consist of systems that are made up of multiple parts. By displaying the online/offline status of hardware parts and (sub)systems, decisions can be made in the context of live risk scenarios (bowties). This can help answer questions like “Can we still safely run operation X when hardware parts 1, 12 and 15 are offline?”

4 – Scrapbook: Reuse bowtie data & turn Excel files into a bowtie diagram

Reusing bowtie data: Do you find yourself filling out the same bowtie elements over and over again? Avoid repetitive work and learn how to reuse data by building a bowtie library with the scrapbook functionality.

Turn your Excel files into a bowtie diagram: Many companies have their risk assessments in Excel. BowtieXP offers an easy way to transform an excel file into a bowtie diagram. This creates a visual overview of your data.

5 – Import other BowTieXP case files

Gathering risk scenarios & incident information, and updating them can be an intense job, especially if the available data is scattered over multiple files and multiple formats. Often clients have the need to merge parts of data from different sources and tend to ask for help to do this in a decent manner. Luckily the BowTieXP software supports this need through different methods.
