The CiTi BOCES mission is to provide cost-effective education that prepares adult learners for the workforce. In 2015, declining NCLEX test scores revealed that nursing students weren’t ready for clinical practice. The curriculum in use at the time relied on memorization rather than ensuring students could apply their learning.
CiTi BOCES needed a solution that integrated multiple learning modalities to better engage students juggling work and family. And time-pressed faculty wanted an easy way to incorporate interactive tools and resources into their lesson plans.
Aiming to prepare students for the NCLEX and for clinical practice, CiTi BOCES faculty rolled out Lippincott® CoursePoint+. The CoursePoint+ learning platform encourages active learning through an online, on-demand, mobile-friendly format that blends modalities optimized for diverse learning styles. Students can access evidence-based, peer-reviewed eBooks, Picmonics, interactive videos, drug cards, and other resources.
CoursePoint+ challenges students to assess a situation, then apply their learning to solve a clinical scenario — building and demonstrating the clinical judgment crucial for the NCLEX and practice.
Now, CiTi BOCES students complete concept maps before class so they arrive at lectures primed to begin applying the information. Phased homework assignments reinforce the lectures. And along the way, students are exposed to thousands of NCLEX preparation item types.
Results
NCLEX pass rates jumped to 95.83% in 2018, from 65.22% in 2016, with an average of just one failure per class.
Faculty incorporate multiple modalities into lessons, including eBooks, animations, interactive case studies, and more, which help students make connections between the classroom and the clinical.
