How to turn your Excel into a Bowtie diagram

We know that many companies have their risk assessment in Excel. Our BowtieXP offers an easy way to transform an Excel file into a Bowtie diagram.

This creates a visual overview of your data. Do you want to know how? In the next paragraph we present the steps that need to be taken. To visualize this information we conclude with a short video to summarize this steps.

Step 1

Make sure your Excel file has the columns:

  1. Entity
  2. Id
  3. ParentId
  4. Name
  5. Description
  6. TopEvent

Please make sure that within this file your ‘children’ refer to the correct ‘parent’ by using the Id for the parent and the ParentId field for its child.

Step 2

  • Open BowtieXP;
  • To open Scrap Book in BowtieXP go to: view > windows > Scrap Book;
  • In Scrap Book: press ‘Open data source file’ and select your Excel file. Your Excel file is now present in your Scrap Book;
  • Drag this file from your Scrap Book into ‘New BowTie Groups’ in the treeview (this is your placeholder);
  • A new bowtie node under ‘ New BowTie Groups’ shows. Press this file and your Bowtie will appear on the screen.

With just a few clicks you can easily transform your Excel file into a beautiful Bowtie diagram.
