Why attend?

  • Explore systematic reviews: Ovid hosts two EBMP resources: the Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews (EBMR) and Evidence-Based Health Collection (EBHC). Following a brief introduction to these two collections, the session will focus on specific databases, prominent within them. For EBMR, these are the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL). For EBHC, this is KSR Evidence.

In doing so, the session will indicate that while all three resources are bound by the common goal of assisting SR authors and users, they each contribute in different ways. Where CDSR, a numerically small database, provides access to the full text of SRs and protocols, CENTRAL, a bibliographic database, hosts a compilation of selected RCTs. It is the primary, mandated source of RCT-related information for Cochrane Reviewers. In contrast, KSR Evidence collects SRs from a wide range of sources, for example from HTA agencies around the world. Composed of mainly bibliographic information, this database uniquely assesses a large number of the SR records for risk of bias using the ROBIS tool developed by the University of Bristol in the UK, specifically for this purpose.

For librarians and information specialists providing assistance to SR authors, it is important that they understand the ‘size and shape’ of these valuable resources as this will impact search strategy design, construction, and execution.
