Compliance with funder-mandated open access policies

Several research funding agencies now require or request authors to publish their research under a Creative Commons license. Wolters Kluwer supports author compliance with the open access requirements of certain recognized funding bodies and institutions via two publication routes, Gold and Green. Specific journal policies may vary.

Gold open access
  • Authors may publish in an open access journal or in a journal that provides an open access option (hybrid journal).
  • An Article Processing Charge (APC) is paid by the author (or on their behalf by their institution or funder). Please see our hybrid journal and open access journal APC price lists for details.
  • The final published article (Version of Record) is publicly accessible immediately under the terms of a creative commons license.
  • Authors supported by certain recognized funders and institutions can generally choose to publish open access under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) License.
  • Authors should check the instructions and policies of specific journals when submitting articles.
Green open access
  • Authors supported by funders who mandate open access publication, but do not fund the Gold open access route in hybrid journals may deposit their final peer-reviewed manuscript (or “author accepted manuscript (AAM)”) in their institution’s or other non-commercial repository and make it publicly available after an embargo period.
  • Under these terms, authors will not authorize the display of the final peer-reviewed manuscript prior to 12 months following publication of the final article if the journal offers an open access option or six months following publication if the journal does not offer open access.
  • Authors should add the below* statement to the AAM version and link to the final published version of record by adding the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) and article URL to the AAM.

*This is a pre-copyedited, author-produced version of an article accepted for publication in [insert journal title]. The published version of record [insert complete citation information here] is available online at: xxxxxxx [insert URL and DOI of the published article from the Journal website].
