The nursing profession is currently experiencing a severe workforce shortage. In 2014, there were 2.7 million registered nurse (RN) jobs in the U.S. That number is estimated to grow to 3.3 million by 2020, 1.2 million of which will be open positions. Of those open positions, approximately 495,500 will be replacements needed. As the population ages and the healthcare and social assistance industry grows, workforce demands will only increase, including practicing mental health (PMH) nurses–a minimal but vital position that is difficult to track. To date, only about four percent of nurses report practicing in the PMH role.
